Chic Chic Chic

It’s always the way that, before you go away for any reason, you realise all these jobs have piled up and you’ll never get them all done in time, and so it was before I headed over to Timor Leste for three weeks to do some training work and volunteering in Renewable energy for the ATA (www.ata.org.au).

Some many jobs and so little time. I did a lot of work getting the greenhouse re-organised, a new garden bed built and planted out, planning for our upcoming permablitz in August and a myriad of other little jobs around the house.

One thing I have been wanting to do for a while is add a few layers to our chicken flock since the original girls are off the lay and I actually had to buy eggs last month!!! (I know! Right?).

Fortunately, the local pet store had a few point of lay ISA Browns for sale when I went to get food so I bit the bullet and bought three. They were more expensive than the last place but I saved all that on petrol plus time so it was worthwhile all round.

They’re fitting in well now that the pecking order has been re-established and I had eggs the next day! Woo Hoo! Backyard Eggs on Toast for breakky – YUM!

I’ll have have plenty of eggs when I get back from TImor Leste in a few weeks and, not long after, the older chooks should be back on the lay 🙂

How are your layers doing this winter?

  1. Still loving that sweetCaptcha system down under this comment box :). Pity we didn’t live closer as I am just about to give away a STACK of Wyandotte point of lay chicks as we have too many of them thanks to our free-rangers all sneaking off in unison and bringing out broods of chicks en masse. 50+ chooks is too many for 1 man that eats eggs and a vegan right? 😉

    • Ah well, I’m sure they’ll go to good homes.

Yeah, 50 might be one or two too many in that situation. mind you a few egg sales might help the budget a little. 🙂

If I ever manage to get down that way I’ll have to pop in for a cuppa.

  2. Our hens have been off the lay all summer long! It’s maddening but it means we get to help our friends out with their egg glut. Our flock of Silver-grey dorkings, light sussex and 2 silkies are performing once again though and with the 3 light sussex hens reaching POL we get 4 or so eggs each day. I can live with that. Our 2 ducks are off the lay but only because they’re on the nest. 2 ducks that will hopefully hatch out several babies for us. 🙂 I just hope our chooks stay on the lay over winter.

    • Yeah, mine were too which is why I got the 3 new ones. We had duck for a while and they were good producers but the fox got 2 and later on the other two took off and never came back 🙁
